From the hustle and bustle of London, to the quiet Isles of Scilly, Rhianna originally joined us on a 12 month placement in 2015. Rhianna returned to us, early in 2017, to become a full-time Ranger.

I have been a full time ranger for the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust since the beginning of 2017. I first arrived on the islands in 2014 completing a one year volunteer work placement for the Trust. This placement was part of my degree course in Wildlife Conservation that I studied at Nottingham Trent University.

After completing my degree I began a Traineeship at the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, building my practical skills before coming back to work for the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust.

The thing I love most about this job is the great variety of tasks we carry out to manage the land on Scilly; no two days are the same. One day could be spent with our cows, another with a chainsaw in my hand or another spent down on the ground surveying plants.

I love: Spiders!

I hate: Earwigs…they like to live in ear defenders and pinch your ears when you’re working!

My favourite place in Scilly: Annet. It’s always an out of this world experience visiting Annet; a place not many people are allowed to visit. It’s amazing to see the seabird colonies that rely on this undisturbed island to breed.

The animal I'd most like to see in the wild: Basking shark. In Scilly it's common to see seals, dolphins and porpoise, and I have been lucky enough to spot several sunfish, and most recently a whale. As basking sharks are a regular visitor around these islands, this would be my next big find to tick off my list.
